If the air at the grille is genuinely cold but there is not enough of it, your system is producing cooling that is not reaching the room. That is a delivery problem, not a cooling problem, and it has a different fix.
We are an independent repair company â not an authorized service center of any air conditioning brand. Brand names on this page are used only to identify the systems we repair, and all trademarks remain the property of their owners.

AC low airflow is a genuinely distinct fault from an AC that is not cooling, and mixing the two up leads people to spend money in the wrong place.
Here is the test that separates them. Put your hand at the supply grille. If the air is properly cold but there simply is not much of it, your refrigeration side is fine â the machine is making cooling, and the problem is delivery. If there is plenty of air but it is not cold, that is the other fault entirely, and refrigerant, coils and compressors come into it.
Delivery problems live in a short list of places: the filters, the blower wheel, the blower motor, the ductwork, and the grilles and returns. All of them are mechanical, all of them are visible to someone who opens the right panel, and none of them requires refrigerant work.
The one that gets missed most often is the blower wheel â the curved-blade drum inside the indoor unit. Years of fine grime change the blade profile and quietly destroy its ability to move air. It is hidden, it is fiddly to clean properly, and most general cleaning offers skip it entirely. On an older unit it is frequently the single biggest airflow gain available.
Cheapest and most likely first. Most low-airflow complaints are solved in the first three.
The free check. Hold them to the light â if no light passes, they are restricting airflow now. In this climate they load fast.
Grime on the blades changes their shape and kills air movement. Loses more airflow than a dirty coil, and almost nobody cleans it.
A mat of fine dust across the fin surface that air cannot pass through. Restricts airflow and cooling capacity at the same time.
Flexible duct compressed, kinked or drooping in a hot roof void. Often the reason one room is weak while the rest are fine.
Furniture against a return, storage stacked in front of a grille, or registers closed after a fit-out. The loop needs a return path.
A motor running on the wrong speed tap, worn bearings, or a weak capacitor leaving it turning slowly rather than not at all.

"It feels better" is not a result. Two measurements before and after tell you whether anything genuinely changed.
The first is the temperature difference across the coil â the gap between the air going into the indoor unit and the air coming out. It is a useful proxy because airflow and that difference are linked: when airflow is badly restricted, the air that does get through spends too long against a very cold coil, so the split reads unusually wide while the total cooling delivered to the room collapses. Restore airflow and the split settles while actual room cooling improves.
The second is airflow itself at the grilles, checked room by room on a ducted system rather than only at the plant. This is what catches the branch-level faults: the one duct that sagged, the damper that stuck, the return that is blocked.
Doing both before and after also protects you from the classic false economy â cleaning a filter, declaring victory, and leaving a caked blower wheel and a collapsed duct in place. If the numbers have not moved, the job is not finished, and we would rather find that on site than have you call again in a fortnight.
This is the reason to treat weak airflow as a fault rather than an inconvenience.
Filters load, the blower wheel cakes, a duct sags. Nobody notices immediately because it happens gradually.
Less warm air arriving means less heat reaching the coil, so its surface temperature drops below the level it was designed to hold.
Once the surface goes below freezing, moisture freezes onto it instead of draining. The ice then blocks airflow further, so it accelerates.
Ice forms outside the drain pan and sheds meltwater down the casing. Now you have a ceiling stain as well as poor cooling.
A restricted, iced coil can allow liquid refrigerant back down the suction line to a compressor built for vapour. Repeated episodes cause real wear.
An inexpensive airflow restoration early prevents the sequence above. That is genuine prevention, not an upsell.
The airflow list is shared across both Dubai cooling technologies. Only the refrigerant part differs.
There is no refrigerant in a district-cooled apartment, so nothing on this page should lead to a gas quotation for a fan coil unit.

Where untreated low airflow ends up â and why ice is usually an airflow fault, not gas.
If there is plenty of air but it is not cold, that is the opposite fault. Start there instead.
A weak capacitor leaves a blower turning slowly rather than not at all â a quiet airflow killer.
Ice from restricted airflow floods when it thaws. The leak-location decision tree.
Filter and blower loading is the standard airflow story in chilled-water towers.
Almost certainly not, and the distinction is worth holding on to. If the air leaving the grille is genuinely cold, the refrigeration side of your system is working â it is producing cooling. The problem is that not enough of that cooled air is reaching the room. Low refrigerant produces the opposite symptom: reasonable air volume that is not cold enough. So cold-but-weak points to airflow restriction, and airflow restriction is nearly always cheaper to fix than anything involving refrigerant.
It is the drum-shaped fan inside your indoor unit, made up of many small curved blades, and it is the part almost nobody cleans. Over years those blades pick up a coating of fine grime that changes their shape and destroys their ability to move air. A caked blower wheel loses more airflow than a dirty coil does, and because it is hidden inside the assembly, most general AC cleaning offers never touch it. Cleaning the wheel properly is often the single biggest airflow improvement available on an older indoor unit.
Because the problem is in that branch rather than at the plant. On a ducted system, a single weak room points to a damper that has stuck or lost its actuator, a flexible duct that has been crushed or has sagged in the roof void, a duct joint that has come apart and is discharging into the ceiling instead of the room, or balancing that has drifted since handover. In Dubai the roof void adds a further factor: it gets extremely hot, so any gap in duct insulation means the air arrives both weaker and warmer.
More often than a manual written for a temperate climate suggests. Between construction dust, fine desert sand and long run hours through a five-month summer, filters here load quickly. The practical test costs nothing: take the filter out and hold it up to the light. If you cannot see light through the material, it is restricting your airflow now, whatever the calendar says. Through peak season it is worth checking monthly rather than seasonally.
Yes, and that is the reason not to live with it. Restricted airflow drops the indoor coil temperature, and if it falls below freezing the coil ices up. An iced coil restricts refrigerant flow and can allow liquid refrigerant to return to the compressor, which is not built to handle it. So an airflow problem left alone becomes a freezing problem, and a freezing problem left alone becomes a compressor problem. Fixing airflow early is genuinely preventive rather than cosmetic.
Yes, and airflow is one of the main things we do address in chilled-water apartments. Your fan coil unit has filters, a coil and a blower exactly as a split system does, and all three restrict in the same ways. What does not apply is anything about refrigerant, because there is none in your apartment. So if a chilled-water FCU has weak air, the honest list is filters, coil face, blower wheel and blower motor â and if the air is weak and also not cold, the chilled-water control valve becomes a candidate too.
We measure airflow and the temperature split, then restore what is actually restricting it. Price agreed before any work, 90-day warranty after.
Cold but weak, or plenty of air but not cold? Those are opposite faults, and knowing which you have decides the whole approach.
